bw Spain, Portugal and Poland are preparing a new programme for seniors with the EC

01/03/2011. Spain, Portugal and Poland are going to work together in order to launch a new social tourism programme aimed at the exchange of senior tourists in these countries. This initiative will be possible thanks to the support of the European Commission which has approved the proposal presented by the three states for the CALYPSO Preparatory Action’s call for proposal, which aims to promote initiatives for social tourism in the EU member states.

The three administrations – the Secretary of State for Tourism and Trade and SEGITTUR (Sociedad Estatal para la Gestión de la Innovación y las Tecnologías Turísticas) for Spain, the Ministry of Sport and Tourism for Poland, and the INATEL Foundation for Portugal – will work over the next 11 months to implement this action and enable transnational trips for seniors in the low season.

The European Commission launched the CALYPSO Preparatory Action in 2009 with the aim of achieving “tourism for everyone”, focusing on four groups: seniors, young people, disabled people and families facing difficult social and/or financial difficulties. The aim is to promote the exchange of tourists between member states in the low season. These states are aware that tourism provides opportunities of developing business, employment and improvement of the quality of life of the citizens.
