19.04.2012. The social and economic impact of the Europe Senior Tourism programme, its configuration and its future, were discussed at the round table on social tourism which took place during the annual conference of the Travel and Tourism Research Association (TTRA) in Bilbao on 18, 19 and 20 of April. The event was organised by the CICtourGUNE and the University of Deusto, and brought together experts in tourism from the academic sector, the travel industry, government and other organisations throughout the world in a forum which dealt with research and its application in the tourism and travel sector.

Over €53 million in economic activity in Spain, nearly 1,700 jobs and 100,000 tourists from 16 nationalities: these were just some of the figures that were unveiled in a summary of the two first editions –in 2009/2010 and 2010/2011– of the Europe Senior Tourism programme, set up by the National Tourist Department through SEGITTUR. The third edition will conclude at the end of May 2012, and the forthcoming season 2012/2013 is currently under preparation.

The debate discussed jointly by representatives of the universities of Nottingham and Valencia focused on the positive social and economic effects of this type of programmes, their contribution to combating seasonality and their usefulness in times of financial crisis, as well as how to make them viable in the medium and long-term.
