Four companies choose to start up the Europe Senior Tourism pilot project
Madrid, May 18, 2009
Four companies, Viajes Sehrs, Viajes Zoetrope, Viajes Ekoalfa (Travelmar) and Eurosenior (Mundosenior), have presented a bid to organize, market, manage and execute the vacation groups in the Europe Senior Tourism pilot project for the season of 2009-2010.
As of this time, the process for assessing the bids is beginning, and in a few weeks the project will be awarded.
SEGITTUR, as the manager of the project through an order with Turespaña, began a simplified procedure to which eight companies were invited that had shown their interest in taking part in the initiative, after the public tender was declared void.
The first edition of this program is planned to begin in October 2009 and end in April 2010. 80,000 places will be offered, between Andalusia and the Balearic Islands, for European citizens over the age of 55 years who would like to enjoy an active holiday at selected destinations during the low season, on an organized group trip partially rebated by the Spanish government. The program will be marketed in all of the countries in the EU with the exception of Germany, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
It must be reminded that the goal of the Europe Senior Tourism pilot project is to fight against seasonality by reactivating the economy during the low season, maintaining and creating jobs, as well as contributing to building on the idea of European citizenship.
The project forms part of the sustainability policy of ht Spanish Tourism Plan Horizon 2020 and the European Commission’s Calypso Initiative, to promote social tourism initiatives in the European Union.
